About me

ba.portraitHi, my name is Burcu Akıncı. I have graduated from Urban Planning, BSc (Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University) and Urban Design, MSc (Istanbul Technical University) in Istanbul. I have gained 3 years of work experience in an Urban Planning Office (Ilke Planlama) in Istanbul where I dealt extensively with projects of a variety of scales. Currently, I am doing my PhD at the Vienna University of Technology at the Department of Spatial Planning with Prof. Sibylla Zech. Additionally, I worked as a researcher at the research institute CEIT Alanova (Central European Institute of Technology) in Schwechat with a strong focus on smart city projects.

I have developed a strong interest in the use of visual language/communications in the urban planning discipline. Today’s rapid development of digital network and communication technologies is having a revolutionary impact on our society. Never before has there been so much visual communication in our daily life. Indeed, with this in mind I have chosen my PhD topic on the role of visual language in urban planning and my aim is to emphasize its importance mainly in engaging people and raising awareness. I believe using visual communication technologies is a very important approach with the potential to remove disciplinary boundaries and unify people from different fields of expertise. There is a need for more creative and sophisticated adoption of our works in order to strengthen design-led, people-centered approaches to innovative, smart, sustainable and inclusive projects.
